Oh. Senaki

Independent travel and view of the city of Senaki!

History of the city of Senaki

Senaki is a city in the west of Georgia, the administrative center of the Senaki municipality in the Samegrelo region - Zemo Svaneti.

Located in the picturesque valley of the Tekhura River, at an altitude of about 30 m above sea level, about 50 km from the Black Sea coast and 290 km from Tbilisi.

Antiquity and antiquity

The area where Senaki is located today has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological excavations in the vicinity - especially at Nokalakevi (also known as Tsikhe-Goji) - show that settlements here existed as early as the first millennium BC.

  • Nokalakivi (17 km from Senaka) was one of the largest centers of ancient Colchis, later part of the kingdom of Lazik (IV-VI centuries AD).

  • This region played a strategic role in trade between the East and Byzantium.

  • Archaeologists have found traces of an ancient fortress, temples, coins and even underground tunnels linking the fortress with the Tehura River.

Thus, although Senaki in its present form appeared later, its territory has long been inhabited and important in the ancient history of Western Georgia.

Middle Ages

After the collapse of the Colchis Kingdom and the fall of Lazika, the area became part of various Georgian principalities - the Abkhazian, and then the United Georgian Kingdom (XI-XIII centuries).Later, in the era of feudal fragmentation, this territory belonged to the Megrelian principality (Samegrelo), which was ruled by the Dadiani dynasty.

In written sources, the name Senaki was first mentioned around the XVII century. Then it was a small monastery and commercial settlement, the center of the local community. The Georgian word for cell means "small room", probably in connection with monastic cells in early Christian times.

XIX century - the birth of the modern city

1. Old settlement

Until the middle of the XIX century there was the so-called Old Senaki - a settlement a few kilometers south of the present city. It was the center of local trade and crafts.

2. Transfer and development

In 1872, the Poti-Tbilisi railway passed through the region, and a new railway station was built nearby. The administrative center moved to the station, where the new Senaki soon grew - with straight streets, administrative buildings, schools and markets.

The railway was a decisive factor in the development of the city: Senaki has become an important transport and trade hub between Kutaisi, Zugdidi and the port of Poti.

The beginning of the XX century and revolutionary events

At the beginning of the XX century, Senaki developed rapidly - schools, shops were opened, the first theater productions began. The city became known as the cultural center of Samegrelo, where educational and political ideas were actively spread.

In 1924, Senaki was one of the centers of the anti-Bolshevik uprising in Georgia. After its suppression, many residents were subjected to repression, but the memory of this was preserved in local legends.

Soviet era

1935–1976: Miha Tskhakaya

In 1935, Senaki was renamed in honor of the Georgian revolutionary Mikhail Tskhakai (Mikh Tskhakai), one of the founders of the Georgian Social Democratic Party. From 1976 to 1989 the city had a shortened name Tskhakaya.

Economics and culture

In the Soviet decades, Senaki became the industrial center of Western Georgia. This is where it works:

  • factories for the production of bricks and building materials;

  • enterprises for processing agricultural products - wine, tea, citrus, corn;

  • furniture and carpet combines;

  • engineering plant.

Also in Senaki appeared:

  • Drama Theatre named after Shamatav (built in 1953-1959, architect Vakhtang Gogoladze);

  • Schools, libraries, House of Culture;

  • Sports school and musical groups.

The city became an important military garrison, which housed units of the Georgian army and later a base of the Georgian armed forces.

Modern period (since 1991)

1. Return of the name

In 1989, after the beginning of the national revival, the historical name of Senaki was returned to the city.

2. Political developments

  • In 1998, there was an unsuccessful military rebellion of the Georgian army stationed in Senaki, which was quickly suppressed.

  • In 2008, during the Russian-Georgian conflict, Senaki found himself in a combat zone and was temporarily occupied by Russian troops. After the war, the garrison was rebuilt and strengthened.

3. Modern development

Today, Senaki is a calm, green city with developed infrastructure. There are schools, a university branch, a music school, a theater, sports complexes and one of the largest military airfields in Georgia.

The city is included in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities for its contribution to the development of education and culture.

The economy is based on the processing of agricultural products (nuts, tea, milk), woodworking and construction. Since 2016, a modern cement plant has been operating that meets Euro-4 standards.

Senaki is one of the oldest settlements in the Samegrelo region. Not far from the city are the ruins of the ancient fortress of Nokalakivi (Tsihe-Goji) - an archaeological monument rooted in the times of ancient Colchis and the kingdom of Lazik. Here, among the stone walls and underground passages, comes to life a story steeped in myths about Jason and the Golden Fleece.

The city name "Senaki" is translated from Georgian as "cell" - a quiet place of solitude. Indeed, even today, Senaki retains a special atmosphere of comfort, tranquility and warmth, the very one for which the Georgian province is so loved.

Nature and recreation

The city stands on the banks of the transparent Tehura River, along which there are green parks and walking areas. The park by the river is one of the most beautiful places to relax: fresh air, the shadow of plane trees, singing birds and the soft noise of the water.
