Day excursion to Birtvis Canyons and Birtvisi Fortress

Georgia is full of beautiful mountain landscapes and original historical monuments. How to combine these experiences in one trip? I offer a convenient option: a one-day excursion to Birtvisi. You will find unique canyons and the legendary fortress of the XI century, impregnable for famous commanders.

The tour will begin in Tbilisi. The main points of the route: Partskhisi, Tbisi, Birtvisi Canyon, Deda-tsikhe, Sheupovary (Birtvisi fortress). To the village of Tbisi we will reach on a convenient minivan- SUV or jeep. From here you have to walk, there and back about 7 km. The tour in Birtvisi is held all year round in dry weather.

The Birtvis canyons are located next to the Algeti Reservoir. On the way we pass the villages of Partskhisi and Tbisi. You can see the ruins of the Partskhis fortress - an ancient stronghold of South Georgia, it was built in the XI-XII centuries.

Then the path lies through the forest and the rocks. Tangled trails winding through the subtropical forest and narrow passageways in a chain of high canyons keep a mysterious atmosphere. There are no signs on the way to the peak with the Birthvisi citadel, but with me you won't get lost.

If you have never been to the mountains, a tour to Birtvisi will give you the opportunity to try your hand. There is about one and a half hours of ascent (with a slow walk) with respite near the ruins of the ancient fortress of Deda-tsikhe. There is no need for special equipment, you will only need comfortable sports shoes.

The road to the top goes past the fortress walls of Birtvisi with holes of loopholes, two gates and a watchtower. Warriors guarding the impregnable stronghold, cut down in the rocks catchments for rainwater, we will see them on the way. At the highest point stands Shepouvari – a watchtower, visible from afar. At an altitude of 1000 m, tourists are waiting for a natural observation deck, from it canyons, ancient buildings, the beauty of the Algeta Valley are visible like in the palm of your hand.

After descending down, we will have a picnic on the grass, it will strengthen your strength!
