Ujarma Fortress
ujarma village, Sagarejo district, Georgia (on the way from Tbiliti to Telavi)
Description:
Ujarma was once famous as a fortress city. But now a reminder that here was a city are only the ruins of the fortress and the village of the same name. The city fell into decline in the X century, after the invasion of the Arabs.
Legend has it that St. Nino “erected one of the three crosses.” Crosses were placed in strategic locations. One gets the feeling that Nino was being advised how best to do it for defense purposes.
Archaeologists in 1950-52 explored the ruins of a fortress-castle, remote from the city, built at a riverside height. The fortress consists of the upper and lower parts. Initially, the fortress had a clear rectangular plan with numerous rectangular towers covered with tiles. The castle is lined with regular and equal squares.
