Temple of Arunachaleswarar
Anna Pillai Street Rd, Sowcarpet, George Town, Chennai-79, Tamil Nadu, India
Description:
The oldest temple Arunachaleswarar stands at the foot of the holy mountain Arunachal, considered the embodiment of Shiva. This mountain is considered older than the Himalayas.
The temple is considered one of the mystical and largest temples of India. This is the house of Shiva, embodied in the Lingam of Fire – Arunachaleswar Lingam. It is one of the greatest temples of Shiva in India. Its area is about 10 hectares. The time of construction of the building is not precisely defined, and its current buildings were built in the XVI-XVII centuries.
There is a legend that says that it was on the site of the mountain and temple that Shiva turned into a column of fire (Shiva Langam). This column could not be seen because of the blinding fire. Shiva said, “This is the only place where I have taken this form for the sake of those who wish to worship me and attain enlightenment.” Now many pilgrims come to the mountain and the temple to bow and walk around the mountain barefoot.
