Enchey Monastery

Enchey Monastery Rd, Gangtok, Sikkim, India

Description:

The monastery of Enchei is known as the place of stay of the divine patrons of these places, and more specifically, as the habitat of the deity Kanchenjungi.

The monastery was founded in 1849 by Lama Druptab Karpo. The legend says that the lama could fly through the air, and it was on the site of the future monastery that he landed after a long flight to Gangtok from South Sikkim. The history of the monastery is written on a tablet placed at the entrance to the temple.

Inside the temple are images of gods, goddesses and other religious creatures. The most revered deities located here are images of Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava. The walls of the temple are covered with paintings and frescoes depicting Buddhist deities. There is also a large collection of masks used for annual ritual dances.

After the destruction of the monastery in 1947, it was restored a year later. After the earthquake in Sikkim in 2006, the temple began to collapse again.
