Dipastambha Tower of Sri Mahalsa Temple
Shri Mahalsa, Mardol, Goa, India
Description:
The dipastambha tower of the Shri Mahalsa temple is located on the territory of the Shri Mahalsa temple, located in the Indian village of Mardol, 7 kilometers northwest of the city of Ponda. It is located in the corner of the courtyard at the entrance to the main sanctuary, behind a 12-meter column - garudambah.
The dipastambha tower is a seven-story oil-lampadu tower of gentle yellow color with carved stone decorations throughout the facade. When the oil lamps are lit in the tower, it turns into a high fire column dedicated to the goddess Mahalsa, the female incarnation of the god Shiva, in whose honor the temple was built. Such pillars of fire were first used in the eighteenth century, when there was a struggle between Muslims and Marathi. It is believed that such towers are only in the Indian state of Goa.
