The Church of the Mother of God of the Immaculate Conception

Althino, Panaji, Goa, India

Description:

This is one of the most famous attractions of the capital of Goa - Panaji, located in the heart of the city. The church was the first Christian temple built here by the Portuguese. In fact, the church building became an unofficial symbol of Goa.

Originally built in 1540, it was reconstructed and expanded in 1619. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary has long served as a landmark for ships entering the mouth of the Mandovi River. The sailors came here with gratitude for the safe navigation. The church is located on the beautiful Panaji Square. Its main decoration is an impressive four-tier staircase leading to the entrance to the temple. The facade of the church is decorated with two tall twin towers, made in the style of Portuguese Baroque. The snow-white exterior color of the walls gives the temple airiness. It seems that he literally hovers above the ground.

The interior of the temple is very simple by the standards of the time, but the main altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary looks impressive. The two altars to the right and left of the main are decorated with elaborate carvings and gilding.

At night, when hundreds of light bulbs are lit along the facade and stairs, the church looks fantastic.
