Church of the Three Magi
Reis Magos, Bardez, Goa, India
Description:
The Church of the Three Magi is located in the village of Reis Magos in Goa, India. It was built in 1555 by Franciscan monks and dedicated to the three Magi who came to the born Jesus with gifts. Later, a theological seminary named after St. Jerome was organized here.
Archaeological excavations indicate that the Church of the Three Magi was built on the site of a destroyed Hindu temple. Two Viceroys of India are buried in the church. Today it is one of the main attractions of Reis Magos.
The church is built in typical Portuguese colonial style. The facade of the church consists of three levels and intricately decorated, the reverse side is simple and consists of two levels. Inside the church there are many decorations, brighter colors and paintings than in European churches. Here is a wooden panel with a scene carved on it offering gifts by the Magi to the baby Jesus. Every year, on January 6, the Church hosts the Festival of the Three Magi with a procession and performances.
