Shri Mahalas Temple

7 km from Ponda

Description:

The magnificent Mahalas Temple is one of the most famous Hindu temples in Goa. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Mahalasa, the incarnation of the god Vishnu.

Shri Mahalasa is just a kilometer from the Mangesh Temple down the road, in a small village called Mardol. Mahalasa is the Goan incarnation of the god Shiva in female form. Among believers, she is considered the goddess of peace and for this reason is very popular among local residents.

The interior of the temple amazes with its splendor - huge wooden columns, high windows with shutters and a beautiful silver ornament decorating the entrance. To the courtyard at the entrance you will see a brass tower for oil lamps 12 meters high. 150 lamps are placed on it, and when they light up at the same time, you see a completely fascinating picture. At the base of the tower lies the turtle Kurma - the embodiment of Vishnu. The bell tower of the temple is a seven-storey building topped with a dome. It is believed that if you walk around the temple, your soul and body will be cleansed of negative energy.
