Lake Wembanad

Vembanad lake, Kerala

Description:

Lake Wembanad is the longest lake in India, which is located in the state of Kerala.

The lake is divided into several parts due to the fact that it lies in several counties of the state at once: the part called Punnamada belongs to the district of Cuttanada, and the part of Cocci belongs to the city of Cocci. The conditional division of the lake was due to the Thaneermukkom Dam, which was erected to prevent flooding of the low part of the city of Kuttanada.

The famous water race named after Jawaharlal Nehru takes place on the waters of Punnamada.

The area of Lake Vembanad reaches more than two thousand square kilometers. The length of the lake is ninety-six kilometers, and the width is fourteen kilometers. The lake includes small islands and peninsulas.

With its extraordinary beauty, the lake has gained popularity among tourists and has become one of the main attractions of the state. On the lake there are floating houses that transport passengers between the islands and play the role of unusual mini-hotels for tourists.
