Mysore for 1 day
Description:
Mysore, formerly called Mysore, is the cultural capital of Karnataka State and has given its name to some iconic products over the years. It is an exquisite Mysore silk, a jeweled royal turban called Mysore Peta and fragrant Mysore sandalwood soap, which was born during the First World War, when the kingdom could not export sandalwood to Europe. Culinary - signature dishes include sweet Mysore Pak and savory Mysore dosa. Thanks to a conscientious society, Mysore was also recognized as one of the cleanest cities in India. With over 200 historic buildings that will take you on a journey back in time, Mysore moves away from the universal idea of tourism and becomes a great destination.
One of the most enduring symbols of the city is the magnificent Mysore Palace, built in 1897. Also known as the Maharaja Palace and Amba Vilas Palace, it is one of the largest palaces in India with mighty domes, arches and colonnades. The all-white Lalita Mahal Palace, the second largest palace in Mysore, was built in 1921 modeled after St Paul's Cathedral in London.
Since the kings of the Mysore Kingdom were adherents of the goddess Chamundi, the palace of Amba Vilas faces the hills of Chamundi, where 1000 stone steps lead to the temple of Chamundeswari. St. Philomena Cathedral, built in 1936 on the model of the German Cologne Cathedral, is among the highest churches in Asia.
Mysoru is a city of history and culture with ample opportunities for self-discovery.
The most recent addition to the cultural landscape of Mysore is the House of Narayana. The home of one of India’s most beloved writers, located in Yadavgiri, opened as a public museum in 2016. It, which features the personal memorabilia of the author of "Mulgudy's Days," offers a delightfully unadorned look at the life of a literary giant whose stories have shaped a generation. Art lovers will be interested in the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery, which occupies three floors in the Jaganmohan Palace. It has a huge collection of Indian paintings, including works by renowned artist Raji Ravi Varma and traditional Japanese art. Mysore also boasts the Regional Museum of Natural History and the Mysore Railway Museum. These structures offer a portal in a simpler time with a range of surviving artifacts - from outdated stethoscopes to boats, dolls and a number of steam locomotives.
