Fort Junagarh

Bikaner, Rajasthan 334001, India

Description:

Fort Junagarh ("old fort") for some time served as the residence of the royal family, so it is considered one of the main attractions of the city.

Junagarh was built in the XVI century. The wall of the fort was made more than 900 meters long, arranging 37 bastions on them. Inside the fort are 37 beautiful palaces, pavilions and temples, which include the famous palaces of Karan Mahal, Anup Mahal, Hava Mahal and Durbarnivas.

The fort is surrounded by powerful walls and desert, which saved it from conquest and subsequent destruction. The most beautiful part of the fort is its front gate called Sarajpol (“Solar Gate”). On the gate are the handprints of 41 widows of Bikaner warriors, who committed suicide in 1806, when it became known about the victory of Mang Singh over the armies of Bikaner and Jaipur.
