Fort Mehrangarh

Fort Road, Near Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur, Rajasthan 342001, India

Description:

Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest fortresses in India. It is 122 meters above the city and is surrounded by thick walls. Inside the walls are several beautifully decorated palaces.

The fortress was built in the XV century on a rocky hill, but most of the buildings date back to the XVII century. The walls of the fort are 36 meters high and 21 meters wide.

The palaces can be accessed through 7 gates, which are very significant from a historical point of view. The most famous is the “Victory Gate”. Some of the gates show the handprints of Ranis, who sacrificed herself on her husband’s funeral pyre in 1843.

The fort houses one of the most well-equipped museums in Rajasthan, where you can see royal palanquins, weapons, costumes, musical instruments, furniture, paintings and other valuable items.

The fort is also a favorite place for filming Hollywood films.
