History of the city of Gorontalo

Early origins

The name Gorontalo is rooted in local languages and has several versions of origin. One of them connects it with the concept of "noble valley", the other - with a fish place where the fish lived gaboos. In ancient times, the area was inhabited by various ethnic groups that formed kingdoms and unions called Pohala’a. The largest of these were Gorontalo, Limboto, Suvava, Boalemo and Atingola.

With the spread of Islam through ties to the sultanates of the Maluccas, local rulers began to adopt a new religion. One of the first was the Sultan Amai, through whom Islam gradually became the basis of local culture and traditions, combining customary law and religious norms.

The colonial era

In the XVII century, the territory of Gorontalo was under the influence of the Sultanate of Ternate, and then came under the control of the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch established administrative order, built forts, controlled trade, and interfered in local politics. During this period, Gorontalo established itself as an important center in the northeast of Sulawesi.

Formation of the city

The date of foundation of Gorontalo as a city is usually associated with the XVIII century. However, the modern administrative status was obtained later - in the middle of the XX century. Gorontalo gradually became the center of administration, education and trade of the region.

The Second World War and Independence

A special place in history takes place on January 23, 1942, when the local national leader Nani Vartobone proclaimed the independence of Gorontalo. This happened long before the independence of Indonesia in 1945. Although the rebellion was suppressed by the Japanese, it became a symbol of the struggle for freedom and played a major role in strengthening the national movement.

Modernity

After World War II and the formation of independent Indonesia, Gorontalo was part of various administrative entities. In 2000, a separate province of Gorontalo was formed, the capital of which was the city of the same name. Since then, it has been developing rapidly: roads, universities, shopping centers are being built, the role of the city as a cultural and educational center of the entire region is growing.
