Aqaba

Pharaoh Island

8 km south of Taba

Description:

The coral islet in the northern part of the Gulf of Aqaba was once converted by the Egyptian king Saladdin into a powerful border fortress. On the island in the XII century, a citadel was built, which routed the crusade of Richard the Lionheart. Today, the island is a favorite destination for tourists from all over the world.

There are two reasons to visit Pharaoh’s Island. First, these are coral reefs, which are loved by divers and lovers of swimming with a mask. The water here is an amazing turquoise color. The local underwater flora and fauna is not inferior in color to the coral reefs of the Red Sea.

Another reason is the fortress itself. Preserved in perfect condition, it is a system of defensive structures - walls and towers that stretch along the entire perimeter of the island. There is a museum on the territory of the citadel. Climbing the tower, you can appreciate all the beauty of the sprawling fjord, and look at the visible shores of three countries - Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Israel.
