Aqaba Castle
Description:
Aqaba Castle, or Mamluk Fort, is a significant historical monument. It was built to protect the territory of the port and moored ships from raids by nomads in the era of prosperity of the Roman Empire. The castle was rebuilt several times in the middle of the XVI century, during the reign of the last Mamluk sultan Kansour al-Ghuri.
The fort was built in the form of a square, with a total area of about 250 square meters, with symmetrical round towers at the corners. Unique writings of medieval Islamic culture are preserved on its walls. During the archaeological excavations of ancient Ayla (present-day Aqaba), the gates, ruins of the city wall with towers, mosques and courtyards were discovered. The archaeological museum, located near the castle, features a fine collection of fort artifacts including pottery, jewelry and coins.
Currently, the castle is actively restored and open to visitors. The Mamluk Fort, standing on the seaside and surrounded by palm trees, is a picturesque scenery for beautiful pictures to remember your holiday in Jordan.
