Zeus temple
Jordan, Jerash, Archaeological Park
Description:
The Temple of Zeus was the main temple in ancient Jerash. Built in the first century AD, it remembers religious festivals and sacrifices within its walls. It is located on a separate temple, so that at the entrance from either side of the city you can see the grandiose structure. It is surrounded by 15 meter Corinthian columns, which have survived to this day.
Designed between the South Theatre and the Forum, a long staircase led from the Oval Square to it. Some of its spans were combined into high vaulted arches that have survived to this day.
The temple, like the entire acropolis, was destroyed in the VIII century by a strong earthquake and a landslide that followed it. Some columns have resisted, presenting now picturesque and majestic ruins. After the restoration work, we managed to recreate the appearance of the main buildings, but unfortunately, we will not know what the temple of Zeus looked like in its original form.
