Madaba

Madaba, Mount Nebo

Description:

35 km southwest of Amman is the city of Madaba, which is called the city of mosaics. This name it received, thanks to the huge number of mosaics that have survived since the Byzantine Empire. The city itself was located at the crossroads of roads and borders of several states, about which it is written in the old covenant, in the history of Maisei’s exit from Egypt, through these places he passed when he led his people to the promised lands.

A few kilometers from Madaba is Mount Siyaga, or as we used to call it, Mount Sky. It was from here that the great prophet saw the lands to which he had been going for for forty years, but never came. Here he received the following instruction from God, gave them to Joshua, who led the people further, and he released his soul, and to this day no one knows exactly where his burial is.

During the Byzantine period, a temple was built on this mountain, and later a monastery, also lined with mosaics, which today we can see in the already rebuilt temple.
