Baghdad International Airport

Description:

Baghdad International Airport is an international airport in Baghdad, Iraq. The largest airport in the country. It is the base for the national airline.

The airport was built by French companies in 1979-1982. The construction of the “air gate” cost Iraq $ 900 million. Upon completion, the current president of Iraq named it Saddam Hussein International Airport.

In 1991, the airport was closed to international flights due to the start of the Gulf War. The non-flight zone was proposed at the initiative of the United States and the United Kingdom.

In 2003, US troops entered Iraq and Saddam Hussein International Airport was renamed Baghdad International Airport. At the same time, the first international flight to Amman (Jordan) was allowed. Official permission for civil lines was granted on 25 August 2004.

Over the next six years, the airport gradually rebuilt, however, and closed for some time due to various events.

2008 was marked by the opening and implementation of a large number of flights to dozens of foreign and local cities: Tehran, Basra, Ankara, Erbil and others. In 2009, the first flight to Europe on the Baghdad-Stockholm-Baghdad route took place, and on April 24, 2010, an Iraqi Airways aircraft connected the Iraqi capital with London for the first time in 20 years.
