Basra Museum

Iraq is located in the old part of the city of Basra.

About the company:

The Basra Museum is located in a traditional house, in the old part of Basra. It was looted during the first Gulf War in 1991, and the remaining antiquities were subsequently taken to Baghdad. The house is small and in poor condition was not suitable for use as a modern museum.

With Iraqi aid and advice, Saddam Hussein's former palace was put forward as a suitable building for the new museum.

It is known as a lakeside palace and is one of several palaces and pavilions built on the outskirts of the city of Basra for Saddam Hussein in the 1990s. The palace is a medium-sized building in a very attractive location, back on the Shatt el Arab waterway.

It will house exhibition galleries and will contain contemporary and ethnographic material from the Basra region as well as its antiquity.

He is still awaiting formal approval, however, from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Iraqi officials will take the project forward with support from the British Army and the British Museum.
