Grand Mosque in Samarra
Iraq, Erbil, Stara Zagora Street.
Description:
The Grand Mosque in Samarra is under the protection of UNESCO and is listed in the register of monuments that make up the World Heritage. The upper part of the mosque was destroyed by Iraqi soldiers who fought against the Americans in 2005.
Fortunately, the rest of the monument, which is made in the form of a huge vertical spiral, was not damaged. And today you can walk through the 33-meter mosque, the name of which "twisted shell" quite reflects the reality of this architectural structure.
It is worth noting that this mosque is the most original in its design among all the existing mosques in the world, and its history, which began in 847, reflects a glass mosaic in ultramarine colors, fine carvings and unique stucco.
It is noteworthy that, depending on the time of day, the mosque changes its color from straw yellow to golden pink.
