Description:
Desmond Castle is a castle formerly used as customs.
The castle building was built around 1500 by the Earl of Desmond, and in 1641 the customs was converted into a naval prison for prisoners of war.
The castle suffered multiple destructions and fires, but was rebuilt and opened to the public in the 1990s.
This castle is a perfect example of a city tower-house, which has many rooms, warehouses and a backyard.
The castle building is made of light stone and consists of three floors.
Today, Desmond Castle houses a wine museum.
