Donovan Castle
Description:
Donovan Castle is the remains of an Irish tower-house near the banks of the River Ilene.
The castle was built around the XVI century by Count Donovan to house his family. It is a tower just over 20 meters high, located on top of a high cliff.
At the moment, the castle is in a dilapidated state, only half of the building remains.
The tower was blown up and severely damaged during Cromwell's campaign in 1641 and has since become uninhabited.
Only the outer walls of the tower on the west side and fragments of the spiral staircase inside are preserved.
