Castle Freck

Rosscarbery, Co Cork, Ireland

Description:

Freck Castle is the remains of the original tower-house castle.

The castle was built by the Barry family in the early XV century and was a two-storey residential building with a defensive round tower on the north corner. In 1648, the fortress was captured by Cromwell’s forces.

At the beginning of the XIX century, the castle was acquired by the architect Sir Richard Morrison and underwent its restoration - a geared roof and some utility rooms were completed. However, in 1910, the castle was engulfed in a fire and after that it fell into desolation.

Currently, from the former splendor of the castle, a round tower and part of a residential building have been preserved.
