Iceland

Explosive day

Description:

White muffin caused the "explosion" of many immoderate eaters.
For Icelanders unfamiliar with terrorist attacks, the word “explosion” does not carry the negative meaning that many other inhabitants of the planet put into it. "Explosion" on the eve of Lent means burst bellies glutton, decided to "prepare for the future" prohibited products: meat, muffin, lard.

Explosive day in Iceland has long been accompanied by festivities and carnivals, despite the fact that the only suitable places for gathering under one roof were the spacious residences of priests, stubbornly opposed to "Bacchanalia". Therefore, despite the desire of the people, warmed up by dark, lonely nights on isolated farms, it was difficult to negotiate with the priests.

One thing remained unchanged: on this day, they ate and ate a lot. In addition to eating meat in unimaginable quantities, Icelanders leaned on white food (so the day was also called White Tuesday): flour buns cooked in milk, milk and rice porridge, any wheat muffin. Remains of food suitable for storage, the participants of the feast were thrown into a bag and hung in the center of the hut (according to another version, over the bed of the most diligent eater), as a reminder of the upcoming Easter and a challenge to the restless appetite.

The blast day was also considered the last day of maids' pay. However, judging by the clown couplets, the payment did not occur according to market laws: We have to pay the bills. On the last Tuesday before the fast / And the maids are waiting for the guys / Pay less.
Apparently, sexual pleasures, together with gastronomic ones, constituted an invariable prelude to the severity of abstinence of Lent.

But if on this day you want an extra piece of beef or bun - feel free to take while you can!
