Hallgrimour Church

Iceland, Reykjavik, Eir ksgata, 101

Description:

The most famous Icelandic building is Hallgrimur Church. The project was designed by architect Samuelson in 1938. In 1945, the construction of the church began. But it was completed only in 1986. One of the reasons for this lengthy process is that there was a lot of controversy surrounding the construction of the church. As a result, the most successful option – the one you can see today – won.

The design resembles rocky mountains and ice sheets, so similar to the landscapes of Iceland. The church and organ are the largest in Reykjavik.
