Thingvedlir National Park

Vallarvegur, Thingvellir National Park, Iceland

Description:

Thingvedlire National Park was founded in 1928. In 2004, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This beautiful park is the jewel of Iceland. It is located 40 kilometers from Reykjavik. It is in this place that the border of two lithospheric plates is located - the North American and Eurasian. The park is surrounded by an active volcanic zone, in which the Hengil volcano, located on the southern shore of Lake Tingvadlavatn, stands out. This lake is the largest in Iceland. The area of the lake is 32 square kilometers, and the depth is more than 100 meters. The park is crossed by the Yoksara River, which forms the Yoksaraurfoss waterfall on its territory. These places are also associated with the most important historical events of the country. In 930, Althingi, the world’s oldest democratic parliament, met for the first time.
