Svartiphoss Waterfall - Black Falls
Description:
Svartifoss is a black waterfall or dark fall. The waterfall is located in the Skaftafell National Park in Iceland and is one of the most famous attractions of this park. The waterfall is surrounded by unique hexagonal columns of black lava, from where its name originated. These columns were formed inside the lava flow, which cooled very slowly, which led it to such crystallization.
The base of this waterfall attracts attention because of its pointed stones, since the hexagonal columns at the beginning of the waterfall are much faster to stop under a strong flow of water.
These unusual basalt columns inspired many Icelandic architects to create remarkable masterpieces of classical architecture, the most notable of which are the Hallgrimur Church in Reykjavik and the National Theatre.
