Church of Akureirakirkya

Akureyrakirkya Cathedral is located on a hill, in the center of the city of Akureyri. Address: Eyrarlandsvegur, 600 Akureyri, Iceland.

Description:

The Lutheran Cathedral of Akureyrakirkya is the main landmark of the city of Akureyri.

The building is located on a hill, in the city center. The project of the church was created by the famous Icelandic architect Gudjoun Samuelson, its doors were opened in 1940. Akureirakyu was built in honor of Matthias Johumssons, pastor, poet and author of the national anthem.

Of great cultural interest is the interior of the church, one of the key components of which is the stained glass window above the altar, once located in the British Coventry Cathedral destroyed by Hitler’s bombs.

By the way, on the stairs to the church for everyone there are races. Everything is organized very festively: with jokes and certificates at the end of the race.
