Hurdubray volcano

Northern Iceland

Description:

Hurdubreid is a volcano erupting under the ice. Thus, it forms a lava lake, which is covered with a glacial shell. Over time, the volcano gradually grows and forms a table mountain, which is located behind the river Jokulsaa Fiollum.

For a long time climbers bypassed Herdubreid side, and only in 1908 there was the first ascent of the ash cone, which was crowned with success. Since then, the summit of this unique volcano has become a welcome target for every climber who arrives in Iceland. You can climb it and admire the stunning beauty of these regions in a rather short period - about six weeks. Especially stunning mountain looks covered with snow and glaciers peak.

However, do not lose sight of the fact that the slopes of Herdubreid are quite steep and dangerous. And almost everywhere there are “living stones”, and nature can bring the most unexpected surprise.
