Krafla volcano and its museum
Description:
The heart of the volcanic activity of the territory is the central volcano Krafla, which is not at all similar to those volcanoes depicted in classical encyclopedias. Instead of a cone-shaped top, tourists see a multi-level system of cracks located next to a magma chamber hidden underground.
The activity of Krafla so far manifests itself only in the form of changes in the local terrain. The first eruption in this area occurred more than 100 thousand years ago. There is a wide trail along the entire top of the volcano, which overlooks the pool. Here you can feel the heat emanating from the center of the crater, the water temperature in which reaches 100 °. You can take a short walk along the trail, which runs around the base of the Krafla volcano past pools with boiling mud and a hot spring with milky water, surrounded by many bright formations covered with sulfur.
Near the volcano is Lake Viti, which is located in the crater of the volcano, with bright blue crystal clear water.
There is also a convenient hotel-museum where visitors learn about the history of the volcano and its energy, which is still used to produce electricity.
