Skalholt Church
The town of Skalholt is located in the south of Iceland, in Sisla Aurnes, on the Hvita River.
Description:
Skalholt Church is one of the largest churches in Iceland. The new cathedral was built in 1956-1963, in honor of the millennium of the episcopal see. For more than 700 centuries, Skalholt was one of the two residences of bishops, being the spiritual and educational center of almost all Iceland. The predecessors of the modern church building were destroyed by fires and storms.
The church has an interesting architectural design – simple graphic shapes look very natural. Some parts of the church were donated by churches in other countries. For example, stained glass windows were donated by the Danes.
An international summer festival of classical music is held annually in Skalholt in the church building.
