Eyjafjallajökull volcano
Description:
Eyjafjallajökull is the sixth largest glacier in Iceland. It is located 125 km east of Reykjavik in the south of the country. Under it there is a volcano that has a conical shape, in the press it is simplified by the name of the glacier - Eyjafjallajökull, since it does not have its own name.
The height of its summit is 1666 meters, and the area is about 100 km2. The volcanic crater has a diameter of 3-4 km and until 2010 was covered with glaciers. The volcano is classified as a thyroid type. After a strong eruption in 1821-1823, Eyjafjallajökull was considered inactive.
But on April 14, 2010, there was an intensified volcanic eruption with large volumes of volcanic ash, which led to the absolute closure of the airspace of some parts of Europe from April 16 to 20, 2010, as well as episodic restrictions in May 2010.
The intensity of the eruption was estimated on a VEI scale of 4 points. Since then, the volcano has been restored to active status.
