Hekla volcano

Hekla, Reykjavik, Iceland

Description:

Hekla volcano is located in the south of Iceland. It is one of the most famous active volcanoes in the world. After the first settlers witnessed the eruption of 1104, there was a legend that Hekla was the gate of hell. In 1766, Hekla spewed a record amount of lava in the history of all the eruptions of the world.

The total area of the base of the volcano is about 40 kilometers long. The crack separating the slope of the volcano is 5.5 kilometers long. The volcano reaches a height of 1491 meters. Only in the XX century, it erupted five times, and since the moment when the first settlements appeared near the volcano - at least two dozen times. All eruptions of Hekla are accompanied by catastrophic consequences. Each time, hot lava turns the surrounding area into a charred desert.

The name of the volcano translates as “hood”. This is due to the fact that the top of Hekla is almost always covered with thick fog or clouds. It is very rare to see the top of the volcano. It is also difficult to approach the foot – on all sides Hekla is surrounded by fields of frozen lava. Nevertheless, a huge number of tourists are trying to climb to the top of the volcano.

Nearby is the Hekla Center, which houses a modern multimedia exhibition.
