All Saints' Day

Description:

All Saints (painting by Fra Angelico)
All Saints Day (El Dia de Todos Los Santos) is a Christian holiday in honor of all saints, known and unknown. It was declared by Pope Urbano IV to make up for any omissions in the veneration of saints during the year.

It is an important holiday for Spaniards and it is declared a day off throughout the country. There are no generally accepted norms of celebration, in each region they are their own.

In Cadiz, on this day, rabbits, piglets and chickens are dressed in the markets. From vegetables and dried fruits, dolls are made that reflect Christ and the social realities of this year with a humorous color.

In Ceuta, it's backpack day. People go to the country with a backpack full of fruit and dried fruit.

In Galicia, chestnuts are fried on this day.

In Catalonia, they also eat chestnuts and eat cassava.

Alicante hosts a festive fair of all saints. Organized by King Aragon Pere IV, it is one of the oldest and most important in Spain.

In Extremadura, everyone goes to the countryside for half a day.
