Description:

The main attraction of Avila is the fortress wall, erected in the XI century. This wall is the oldest of the well-preserved, so in 1985 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The settlement itself, of course, was founded long before that by the Veton tribe. Here managed to visit the Romans, and Visigoths, and Arabs. But only the first left traces of their presence in one part of the city.

During the Reconquista era, Avila was constantly under attack. She was attacked by both Christians and Moors. After the XI century, Christians finally took possession of the city and created an impressive wall around it. It consists of 88 towers and 9 gates, and the total length is more than 2,500 meters. In the hope of fulfilling the function of defense, not only this fortress was built, but also the Avila Cathedral. Its bell tower performed defensive functions and was included in the line of fortress walls.

In general, Avila is called the center of Catholic mysticism. Here lived and now rests St. Teresa of Avila, enjoying world fame. Most of its relics are scattered throughout the temples and monasteries of the city.
