Medieval towns: Besalu and Rupit
Description:
Have you been to the real Catalan outback?
I suggest for a day to leave the sea coast and go to the area called Garrotcha, known for its extinct volcanoes and beech groves. On an area of more than 15 thousand hectares there are about 40 extinct volcanoes and 20 frozen lava flows. It is the largest volcanic zone in the entire Iberian Peninsula.
In the valleys, between volcanoes, scattered countless churches of the distant Romanesque period. And the mountain villages managed to preserve to this day their harsh medieval appearance. On the excursion we will get acquainted with unique ancient towns: Besalu is a medieval fortress city, with an area of 5 square kilometers. A small town - cobbled streets crooked and narrow, centuries-old doors with ancient decor, houses with columns and arcades. Once there were knights, Jews traded and pilgrims rested.
Rupit is a witch town built on frozen lava, at an altitude of 890 meters above sea level. The first mention of Rupita comes in 968. There is still a cult of witches in Rupita.
