Church of Santa Maria del Mar

Placa de Santa Maria, 1, 08003 Barcelona, Spain

Description:

The Church of Santa Maria del Mar, built in the early XIV century, is considered the most beautiful church made in the Gothic style.

Its construction began during the heyday of trade and navigation under King Alfonso I and lasted from 1329 to 1383. The reason for its construction was the victory at Sardinia, so the church is called “sea”. Before sailing, all the local sailors prayed.

The architect of the temple is Berenger de Montagut. If you look at the tympanum of the portico, you can see the figure sitting on the throne of Christ, before whom John and Mary knelt. The main altar is decorated with a figurative image of the Crowning of Mary, in the legs of which there is a sculpture of a sailing ship.
