Montjuic Fortress
Montju ï c, 08038 Barcelona, Spain
Description:
The fortress of Montjuic testifies to many vicissitudes of the history of Barcelona. The structure stands at an altitude of 173 meters, so from its observation deck opens a panoramic view of the city, which used to be very important for military fortification.
The castle was built on the mountain of the same name in 1640 during the Catalan uprising against the Habsburgs. Initially, there was a watchtower on the mountain. The new fortress played a major role in the defense of the kingdom in the war of 1705-1714. In 1940, the head of the Catalan government Luis Kompanis was shot in the fortress.
The castle acquired its present appearance in the XVIII century - at this time it was reconstructed by Juan Martino Kermeno. Now the castle houses the Museum of Arms, opened by decree of Franco in 1963.
