Description:
The Municipal Botanical Garden of Montjuïc, in addition to its tourist appeal, performs an important social mission. One of the main tasks is to preserve the collection of Mediterranean plants worldwide. Among the main goals is the preservation of the unique natural heritage of Catalonia.
The garden is located on the hill of the same name, between the castle and the Olympic Stadium. This is a terrain with quite steep slopes, the height of which ranges from 100 to 140 meters. The shape of the site, on which the garden stretches, looks like a large amphitheater with an area of about 14 hectares. It offers magnificent views of the delta of the Llobregat River, the Olympic Ring, Mount Garraf and Collserola. The garden starts just behind the National Palace.
The territory consists of two levels: the lower garden near the lake and the upper tier near the house. In the part of the garden, which is located near the lake, many small waterfalls. These gardens are sometimes referred to as “drowned” gardens, with temperatures typically about 4 degrees lower than at the top, making it possible to grow crops from more northern areas. At the very bottom there is a pond into which many artificial streams flow. The Botanical Garden of Montjuïc contains an extensive collection of unique plants from almost all parts of the world.
