Joan Miro Park

Carrer d'Arago, 1, 08015 Barcelona, Spain

Description:

The modern park of Joan Miro has the second name - Park de l'Escochador. This name appeared due to the fact that in the XIX century there was a massacre at this place. The current park was opened in the 1980s. The park is one of the most popular holiday destinations for citizens and guests of Barcelona.

The park is located on two levels. The lower tier occupies a green area where you can walk among palm trees, pines and eucalyptus. The second level is the most original part of the park. The main attraction of the upper tier is the sculpture “Woman and Bird”, created by sculptor Joan Miro. The 22-meter sculpture is decorated with bright multi-colored tiles, very picturesquely reflected in the water of a nearby reservoir. The opening of the sculpture "Woman and Bird" took place in 1983. The exterior of the sculpture was made by another sculptor, Joan Artigas, who covered it with blue, red, green yellow tiles.

The Woman and the Bird was one of Joan Miro’s last works. He was entrusted with the design of three monuments, which were to become a greeting for the guests of the city and the hallmark of Barcelona. The main condition was that all sculptures should be equally well viewed from the air, sea and land. The main task was successfully completed, but the author could not attend the opening of his work, because by that time he had died of a serious illness.
