Monastery of San Miguel de Fay
08182 Sant Feliu de Codines, Spain
Description:
The Benedictine Monastery of San Miguel de Fay is the only monastery in Catalonia to be built in rock, as well as the most famous and well-preserved "cave monastery" in all of Spain. The walls and roof of the monastery are rocks, which gives the structure originality and unusualness.
The monastery is located in an amazingly beautiful place: in a natural park, in which rivers and stone for many centuries created masterpieces of nature, creating various forms of stalactites and rocky ledges.
Built such a unique monument of Catalonia Count Bezora in the X century. He did not spare money for the construction of the temple: he decorated and expanded it in every possible way. But his original creations have not reached our times. Now we see a Gothic monastery belonging to the XV century.
There were never many monks in the monastery. In the years of its prosperity, it numbered up to 10 monks, and in the years of its collapse - 3-4.
