Port of Barcelona

Carrer del Plom, 26, 08038 Barcelona, Spain

Description:

The history of the seaport of Barcelona dates back more than 2000 years, during which it became one of the most important seaports in Europe. Today it ranks 9th among the largest European ports. It was the port that became the basis of the huge wealth that the city possessed in the Middle Ages.

At the initial stage, the port was just a place of anchorage of ships, which was located south of Mount Montjuïc. In ancient times, this site was used by Phoenician traders. But since the parking lot was not protected, ships and goods were lost, and it was decided to create an artificial port. Barcelona councillors received permission from King Alfonso V to build a port to facilitate loading and unloading. The first work on the construction of the new port began in 1428.

Today, the port of Barcelona has an area of 7.86 square kilometers, it includes three main zones: the old part of Port Well, as well as a commercial port and logistics port. The port authorities hope to double the area of the port in the near future, including the territory at the mouth of the Llobregat River.
