Salt Mountain

3 km from Cardona, Catalonia, Spain

Description:

Salt Mountain with a height of 170 m is located 3 km from Cardona. In this natural park, tourists will have to go down 80 meters underground to view the underground museum with salt formations. The cave itself reaches 1500 m in depth.

The mountain was formed in the ancient Neolithic, when a huge amount of salts began to arise and accumulate. The ancient Romans and Iberians mined salt to benefit the city. At first, salt was mined only on the surface, and later underground. Also underground miners found a lot of magnesium and potassium. The lower the mines, the higher the temperature became: when it reached +51 degrees in 1990, the extraction of salt and minerals was banned.

Now the mountain is known as the Museum of Salt Mining, which collects samples of equipment for its extraction. There you can also buy souvenirs made of salt and admire the fabulous stalagmites and stalactites.
