Picasso Museum
Carrer de Montcada 15-23. (Barrio Gotico Center)
About the company:
The Picasso Museum is one of the most visited museums in Barcelona. Opened in 1963 in the Gothic mansion of Berenguer d’Aguilar on Rue Moncada, the museum gradually grew, and today occupies half a street.
The museum houses more than 3,500 works of the artist. These are mainly early paintings by Picasso, painted between 1895 and 1904 before leaving for Paris. Some of the first landmark works are The First Communion (1896), Science and Mercy (1897). The crown of the collection is a series of 59 interpretations of Velázquez’s masterpieces. Here is “Dancer” and “Harlequin”, the writing of which Picasso was inspired by his time with the Russian ballet in Paris.
Picasso’s works are arranged in chronological order, which makes it possible to trace the artist’s creative path, from the first children’s drawings with a pencil, to the blue (1901 – 1905) and pink periods (1907 – 1914).
In addition to painting, the museum has a large section of ceramics (a gift from Jacqueline Picasso) and a section of printed graphics. Even after the death of his friend and secretary, Jaume Sabartes, Picasso set aside a copy of each print for him.
