Oh. Besalu

Besalu is a tiny town in Spain, about 3,000 people live on an area of about 5 square kilometers. The city is 30 kilometers from Girona, if you arrive by car, leave the car in one of the city parking lots. From Barcelona you can get to Besala by train or bus.

The city is recognized in Spain as a national treasure and an open-air museum, so if you are nearby, we advise you to visit Besala.

The city was very well located historically, on the one hand, access to the sea and expensive agricultural land, and on the other - a mountainous area, where cattle were herded, and the access to which was considered strategically important.

History of origin: Scientists believe that the city began to be built in the Middle Ages around the count's castle, located on the mountain. There are also theories that Besalus is of Roman origin.

Attractions of Besalu: in the first place is a defensive bridge with seven spans on the Fluvia River. Previously, this bridge served to enter the city, it collected the state duty and entry fee. The structure has an unusual, curved shape due to the fact that the foundation was stone boulders of the river of various shapes. The bridge was completely completed and repaired by 1965, before that, unfortunately, several spans of it were blown up during the Civil War and the structure was subjected to various reconstructions. Now the bridge is the calling card of Besalu.

Freedom Square is the main city square, now it is a place of solemn events and recreation of people. In ancient times there was a market and a royal residence.

The house of Cornell (XII century) is privately owned, so it will not work, but you can admire the architecture of the Romanesque style and the picturesque courtyard from the street.

In Besala you can visit the Museum of Miniatures with the most interesting collection in Europe, there is a museum of cheese and smoked goods.

An interesting city bait for tourists is made as follows: in Besala on one of the streets to the outer walls of the houses, chairs are attached, according to legend, this is done so that evil spirits could sit on them and relax a little, without penetrating people’s homes.

In early September, Besala hosts a festival of medieval art, in which citizens take an active part, and these days tourists from all over Spain and European countries come to the city.
