Description:
We will go to one of the most beautiful places in Spain - San Juan de Gastelugache. This place was chosen as one of the 7 wonders of Spain. The Basque coast in this area is rocky and impregnable, and the sea has carved into the coastal rocks bizarre formations, tunnels, arches and caves. The island appeared above the ocean surface as a result of the release of volcanic rocks, which explains its bizarre shape. The island of San Juan de Gastelugache is located in the center of these geological formations, next to another picturesque island of Akeze, which is known as the Island of the Hares, a real paradise for seabirds. On the island sheltered a small ancient chapel dedicated to the beheading of John the Baptist, which can be reached from land by a narrow stone staircase, numbering 241 steps. According to legend, anyone who reaches the chapel must ring the bell three times and make a wish.
San Juan de Gastelugache is not only a picturesque natural corner, but also the most famous sea sanctuary of the Basque Country. For centuries, it was an important Basque pilgrimage site, especially among the sailors of the Biscayne coast. You can admire the view of this island from the observation deck on the mountain or, if you wish, go down the mountain and climb the island (1 hour walk).
After exploring the island of San Juan de Gastelugache, dine at a traditional Basque restaurant located on a mountain with beautiful views of the ocean and the island.
