Cathedral
Calle Gran Ví a de Coló n, 5, 18001 Granada, Spain
Description:
In 1523, the construction of the Cathedral began in Granada. The architecture of the cathedral is quite mixed: here the Gothic style and elements in the Renaissance style are intertwined.
The first architect working on the project of the shrine, embodied his idea for the construction of the tower, which symbolizes the victory over the Moors. The tower is located above the dome of the cathedral, and its height reaches 57 meters. Further, the construction of the cathedral was engaged in a surprisingly talented architect and sculptor Alonso Cano. The square surrounding the temple bears the name of the architect. The facade of the building is divided into two parts by a protruding cornice. Part of the facade located at the bottom is decorated with carved medallions, and the upper part is decorated with statues installed on the cornice. At the entrance to the main chapel were placed statues of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. The chapel is made in the form of a polyhedron, and its vault is supported by columns.
The interior of the cathedral is made in white and golden shades. Here is a series of paintings “Seven joys of Mary”. The oldest part of the cathedral is considered the royal chapel (16th century), where the remains of the aforementioned rulers are located.
On the territory of the Royal Chapel there is a Museum of Painting, where there are valuable works of the Dutch school of the XV century.
