Generalife Gardens

C/ Real de la Alhambra, s/n, 18009 Granada, Españ a

Description:

The gardens of Generalife are located on the hill of Cerro del Sol, near the famous fortress of the Alhambra, in the medieval part of the city of Granada. The gardens and the palace of the same name were built in the 14th century. Today, the Generalife are on the UNESCO World Heritage List and are a valuable example of the Arab royal residences of the Middle Ages.

The garden complex includes the courtyards of Patio de la Asecia with a large pool, flower beds, a fountain, colonnade, pavilions and Hardin da la Sultan - the best preserved garden of Muslim Spain. In the gardens grow beautiful bushes of roses, boxwood, yellow-violet, carnations, and various shrubs. The Generalife is considered the oldest surviving Moorish gardens and a masterpiece of horticultural art – it seems to recreate the image of paradise from the holy book of Muslims.
