Jerez, the city of wine and horses.
Jerez de la Frontera, the birthplace of the famous Spanish sherry, the birthplace of Cartuhan horses and the city where you can see a concert of real Spanish gypsies - flamenco performers. Jerez grew up on the site of the ancient Iberian village of Hera, colonized by the Phoenicians. Due to its location during the Roman Empire, Jerez was one of the roadside towns on the great Roman route, Via Augusta, with the name Seret.
During Visigothic rule, Jerez lost its former status as an agricultural center.
With the beginning of the Arab conquest, near Jerez, there was a major battle with the troops of the Visigothic king Roderich, during which the king died, and the Arabs began their victorious procession through the expanses of Spain. During the Muslim rule, Jerez changed its name and on the site of a small village grew a city with a large mosque and castle, fortified by the city wall.
The conquest of Jerez by Christians took place in 1231. The prefix "de la frontera" (border), Jerez received after 1238 with the formation of the Emirate of Granada, on its territory passed the border of Muslim Granada and Christian Castile.
Changed times and governments, but the prefix, border remained not only in Jerez, but also in several small towns of southern Spain, as a reminder of the ancient history of these places.
Today, many tourists come to Jerez to visit the world’s most famous wineries (bodegas) producing wine and brandy and see the colorful show “How the horses of Andalusia dance”. A tour of the old historical center of Jerez with a visit to the Cathedral and the Alcázar Fortress lasts about 3 hours.
